We’ve walked through a lot of Pittsburgh kitchens. Some were cramped 1920s galleys in Squirrel Hill. Others were dated builder specials out in the North Hills. What strikes us lately is how similar the wish lists have become. Families here want kitchens that work as hard as they do, and they want them to feel […]
We have walked through hundreds of Pittsburgh homes mid-renovation. One question comes up again and again. A homeowner stands in a half-gutted living room, dust everywhere, and asks whether they should have started downstairs instead. It is a fair thing to wonder. The order you tackle projects can quietly save you thousands of dollars, or […]
We’ve walked through a lot of Pittsburgh homes over the years. Some were 1920s foursquares with plaster walls hiding a century of stories. Others were mid-century ranches out in the suburbs, quietly settling on old coal-country soil. Every single one taught us the same lesson: a renovation here is never just about design. JL Home […]
After years of gutting kitchens and finishing walk-out basements across the South Hills, our crew has learned to read a room. Literally. The stark-white, wide-open box that defined the last decade is quietly being retired. In its place, people want rooms that earn their keep, surfaces with a little drama, and spaces built for rest. […]
Picture a 1920s foursquare in Squirrel Hill where the owners are eating cereal out of paper cups on folding chairs. The half-gutted kitchen has no counters left. Three separate crews were hired for three separate rooms, and none of them are talking to each other. That scene is the exact reason we built JL Home […]
The 19 Degree Morning That Made Us Believers We get a version of this call every January. A young couple has just bought a 1960s Cape Cod in the South Hills and the upstairs bedrooms never warm up. You could stand in the hallway and feel the cold pouring down from the ceiling. We pulled […]
We have been called in more than once after another crew gutted a kitchen, pocketed a large deposit, and quietly stopped showing up, with nothing on paper spelling out who owed what, no real timeline, and no way to hold anyone accountable. Those jobs shape how we write every agreement today. JL Home Builders handles […]
We get a common call from Cranberry sellers: a couple convinced they have to gut the kitchen before listing, cabinetry quote in hand, dreading it. The right move is usually to walk the whole house first, attic to basement, and then put the checkbook away. Painted cabinets, new quartz counters, and a tidied front entry […]
Homeowners often call in a quiet panic. They have fallen for a magazine kitchen and are convinced the only way to get it is to knock down a wall and start from scratch. Talk it through at the counter and, more often than not, every wall stays exactly where it is and they still end […]
We get this call all the time. The only full bathroom in the house has finally given up. The grout has gone gray, the vanity tilts to one side, and the mirror is the frameless slab every builder put up in the 1990s. The homeowner is bracing for a big quote and a month of […]
