Start With the Patio
Every outdoor kitchen Pittsburgh homeowners build needs a base that survives forty freeze-thaw cycles a winter. That means excavation, compacted stone in lifts, and either air-entrained poured concrete or pavers on a proper base with edge restraint. Exposed aggregate concrete is a strong choice here: it is slip-resistant, it hides salt staining, and it sheds water. If your yard slopes, the patio may need a block retaining wall on the low side and steps to the house. Get that right first. Countertops and appliances can be added later; a bad slab cannot be fixed later.

Drainage Is Not Optional
Pittsburgh clay holds water. Grade the patio so water runs away from the house, extend downspouts past the slab, and add a channel drain or French drain if the yard collects runoff. An outdoor kitchen island sitting in a puddle every April will heave, and its cabinets will rust from the bottom up.
Rough In the Utilities While the Ground Is Open
Gas for the grill, a frost-proof water line and drain for a sink, and electrical for lighting and a refrigerator all run under the slab. Put them in during the patio pour, even if the appliances come next year. Keeping the outdoor kitchen close to the indoor kitchen wall shortens every run and lowers the cost. Layout
Keep the cook’s zone separate from the sitting zone. An L-shaped island with the grill on the short leg and seating on the long side works in most yards. Leave 36 to 42 inches of walkway behind the cook. Put the fire pit or fireplace where people naturally gather, not next to the grill.
Fire Features
A gas fire pit or a stone fireplace extends the season into November. Gas is cleaner and easier; wood is warmer and smells better. Lighting
Task light over the grill and prep counter, low-voltage path lights along walkways and steps, and something soft overhead. Run the conduit during the pour.
What to Budget
The patio, walls, steps, and utility rough-ins are the bulk of the cost and the part that has to be done right. Appliances and finishes can be phased. If the yard needs a retaining wall or significant grading, price that separately so you can see it.
